Sensory Support Kits

Sensory Support Kits and Wobble Cushions are available to any library user for in-library use. They can be requested from the Service Desk with a library card or other piece of collateral. Each kit provides a variety of items that can be used to provide sensory support for library users. Items have been selected to provide calming, stress relieving, focus, regulate sensory input, and exercise motor skills and hand eye coordination.

What's in a kit?

Sensory support kits contain fidget toys, noise-canceling headphones, and sunglasses. Some kits also contain a weighted lap pad. Wobble cushions are available separately from the kits.

Sensory Support Items Available at the Library

Wobble Seat Cushions:
These vinyl cushions are lightly inflated with varied textured nubs on each side. Each cushion is inflated at different levels to accommodate a wide range of body sizes.
Sensory Benefits: 
This active seating adaptation benefits the user through the inflation which provides a means of continuous micro-movements while seated. Using these cushions improves posture, increases focus, and channels restlessness.

Noise-Reduction Headphones
These adjustable over-ear headphones are designed to reduce surrounding environmental noise without completely blocking important sounds. They provide a comfortable fit and can help create a more comfortable sensory experience in busy or noisy environments.
Sensory Benefits:
Many individuals with sensory sensitivities may find loud, sudden, or constant background noises overwhelming. Noise-reduction headphones help decrease the intensity of sounds such as conversations, crowds, electrical buzz, announcements, and other environmental noise. By lowering auditory input, they can support emotional regulation, reduce stress, and make it easier to focus, participate in activities, or remain comfortable in public spaces.

Glare-reducing Sunglasses:
These glare-reducing sunglasses have polarized lenses with frames made of resin. Each kit comes with two sizes to accommodate adults and children. The adult sizes are oversized and are able to fit over many glasses. The children’s sizes are rubber-tipped for ear comfort. 
Sensory Benefits:
Many people with sensory sensitivities are negatively impacted by harsh, unnatural lighting. These sunglasses lower the amount of intense, reflected light reaching the eyes to significantly reduce sensory overload, eye strain, and discomfort.

Weighted Lap Pad & Bean Bag Animal:
This weighted lap pad is covered with a dry erase material that allows the user to “write” on it with the included water pens. The weighted bean bag snake is created with a stretchy shimmering material and filled with sand.
Sensory Benefits:
Many people with sensory sensitivities can become overstimulated which, in turn, causes anxiety. The weighted lap pad provides deep pressure therapy which calms an overactive nervous system, reduces anxiety, and provides relaxation. The weighted bean bag snake provides similar support with a friendly face.

Clicking and Stretchy Fidgets:
The Wacky Track click fidgets are constructed of 24 polypropylene links that pivot into a variety of configurations. The stretchy fidgets are made from a stretchy plastic and have a variety of colors and textures.
Sensory Benefits:
Many people with sensory sensitivities will seek out an outlet for movement, tactile needs, and physical tension. Clicking fidgets provide a repetitive tactile outlet that satisfies the body’s need for movement, while stretchy fidgets satisfy intense tactile needs and release physical tension.

Liquid Motion Bubbler:
Liquid motion bubblers are constructed of plastic that is filled with clear and colorful liquids. The motion is activated by turning the bubbler upside down. Gravity kicks in causing the colorful liquids to move through the clear liquid. 
Sensory Benefits:
Many people with sensory sensitivities experience stress inducing sensory overload. The bubbler provides a slow, rhythmic visual focus that lowers stress, anchors attention, and puts a gentle stop to sensory overload.
